Top Attributes for Buyers When Looking for Homes

I found this great infographic from Realtor.com that shows how buyers evaluate homes based on emotional reactions. Here are few stats they found:

69% of home buyers surveyed reported that they have had a house crush

  • Top attributes for Women:

    • 54% - Outdoor Living Spaces
    • 42% - Open Floor Plans
    • 29% - Curb Appeal
    • 29% - Updated Appliances & Fixutres

  • Top Attributes for Men:

    • 46% - Outdoor Living Spaces
    • 40% - Garages
    • 35% - Curb Appeal
    • 30% - Open Floor Plans
What does this mean?

  • If you're looking to buy:

    • Pay attention to what appeals to you and your family. If you're really serious about your search for a long term home, I suggest keeping a house hunting journal. Take notes on what the top traits are for each house you visit. How do you feel when you walk in the front door? What is your favorite feature? Don't forget to list the things that bother you. If possible, rank each house on a scale of 1-5. This way, after you've visited a dozen homes - you can compare and really assess how well a house fits.

  • If you're looking to sell:

    • Use this to rate your home on each of these items: Outdoor Living Spaces, Floor Plans, Garages, Curb Appeal etc. How can you magnify your ranking? Will planting a few flowers and adding a fire pit turn your back yard into an oasis? Will a fresh coat of paint nudge your curb appeal higher? Would a few shelving units amp up the garage? If these are the areas that most buyers affix an emotional attachment - you need to make sure your home scores high. It might just be the edge that turns a "just looking" into a "just bought."
